Review: Nothing Like I Imagined

Nothing Like I Imagined (Except for Sometimes)  by Mindy Kaling
Publisher: Amazon • Publication Date: October 6, 2020

I’m a huge fan of Mindy Kaling’s, she is the reason I began subscribing to Hulu because I needed to watch The Mindy Project. I loved her past two books so I couldn’t wait for the 6 essays in her new Amazon collection. I highly recommend listening along to these since Mindy narrates them.

From talking about her social anxiety to raising her daughter, to picking up the tab for A-listers in Hollywood to why she is happy being single, Mindy shares it all with honesty and humor. And who would’ve known that she is as obsessed with Kyle Chandler as I am? She refers to him as a national treasure, which made me love her even more.

My favorite essay would have to be Please Like Me (But Keep Away), in which she talks about her social anxiety and having to plaster a smile on your face and pretend to be happy when you are not. I love that as a society it is becoming much easier to discuss our mental health, especially during the past few months when our environment has changed so much and taken a toll on us physically, emotionally and mentally. I found myself agreeing with so much about what Mindy was sharing and I applaud her for the brutal honesty she shared.
