Review: The Intimacy Experiment

The Intimacy Experiment by Rosie Danan

A former porn star and a Reform rabbi, it sounds like the set up for a joke, but these two starring characters make up an incredible Jewish story. The Jewish representation is enough to make me kvell, but to see words on the pages such as kugel and JCC, words that we don’t normally see in books, made this *chef’s kiss.* Thank you Rosie Danan for giving me the opportunity as a Reform Jew to see my beliefs in a book.

Naomi was my favorite part of The Roommate and her chemistry with Ethan from the start drew me right into the book. I liked that the book offered both Naomi and Ethan’s perspective and I loved their road to a relationship.

Throughout the book, Naomi embarks on a journey to learn more about Judaism and that was something I could relate to. Growing up, my family celebrated all of the major Jewish holidays, but since I chose not to attend Hebrew school, I didn’t know much about Judaism. With working at a JCC for the past few years, I’ve had the opportunity to learn more and more about my religion each day.

When I came across this line in the book, I had to highlight it, “I’m a Jew, I’ve experienced discrimination before. It didn’t change what I believed then and it’s not going to change what I believe now.” I found it not only fitting to those that have faced anti-Semitism, but for all that have faced discrimination and what is going on in the world today.
